Pourquoi mes amis, pourquoi?
Great article by Jug Suraiya a couple of days ago in the Times of India. He was talking about an artist, his societal responsibilities, and the freedom of expression, the same discussion that Rachna, Vicksy and I were having in the library just before the Bioseparations minor II. I will post a link when it is put online.
The French have, meanwhile, rejected the EU constitution. Like in all cases, vox populi has nothing to do with the issues at hand, it is more a case of frustration with existing problems and the presumption that exercising of their rights will solve them. It is just like in India, where people vote for their caste, which is why I am governed by inefficient, incompetent jerks. Perhaps Plato was right in opposing democracy, for it brings equality among unequals.
The French sentiment is actually one shared in many parts of Europe. The Germans are still to wake up to the fact that the USSR has fallen, and that the Wall is no more there. People still differentiate between the osties and the westies, and don't want others to come in. The Dutch, I fear, are also going the anti-Islam way (since the van Gogh affair), and the French, already in trouble due to their pesudo-secular policies, are merely getting worse. This quest for independence and individuality is the bane of the west, just like the complete lack of individuality is the bane of the east (though this is changing now, but changing perhaps too rapidly). You cannot wall yourself in. If only the sons of the soil should be the sons of toil in France, then so be it, their economy will automatically get screwed, and implode when there are unable to find competitive markets.
